Best smart ring for sleep tracking
A smart ring is comfortable to wear at night, which makes it a good sleep tracker. Two rings now have an FDA cleared sleep apnea feature. Most do not.
From Dr. Kenny Civello, cardiologist and electrophysiologist
Reviewed October 2026. Prices as of that date.
A sleep tracker estimates your sleep each night, and you can buy one yourself. A sleep test looks for a disorder like sleep apnea, and a doctor orders it.

Smart rings and sleep apnea
Two rings have an FDA cleared sleep apnea feature. They do different jobs. One is a test. The other is a screen.
Happy Ring is a home sleep test
FDA cleared in June 2025 as a home sleep test, by prescription. You wear it while you sleep. A sleep physician reads the results and decides whether you have sleep apnea.
Samsung Galaxy Ring is a screen
FDA cleared in July 2026 to look for signs of moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea in adults who have not been diagnosed. You wear the ring for two nights within 10 days. It cannot diagnose sleep apnea. Samsung says the feature comes to the ring this fall.
Oura and RingConn are not cleared
Oura has no FDA clearance. RingConn has a sleep apnea screen, but the FDA has not reviewed it.
A screen is not a diagnosis
A screen tells you whether to get tested. A normal result does not rule out sleep apnea. Only a sleep test, read by a doctor, can diagnose it.
When to ask for a sleep test
Ask your doctor for a home sleep test if you snore loudly, someone sees you stop breathing, you wake up gasping, or you are sleepy during the day. Ask too if you have AFib or blood pressure that is hard to control, or if a ring or watch flags possible sleep apnea. See My watch says I may have sleep apnea.

Know before you buy
Sleep stages are estimates
Rings are good at telling sleep from wake. They are less accurate on sleep stages. One study in older adults found a ring missed about 75 minutes of sleep a night.
Snoring and pauses need a real test
If you snore or someone sees you stop breathing, ask for a sleep study. A wellness screen cannot rule out sleep apnea. See Sleeping well.
Blood pressure on rings
Since an FDA policy change in January 2026, rings can show blood pressure estimates without FDA review. Happy Ring is the exception, cleared in September 2026. Check with the maker on how to get it.
Ultrahuman and Evie
The older Ultrahuman Ring Air cannot be sold in the US after a patent ruling. The Ring Pro can. The Evie ring is no longer sold.
Get the sizing kit
Ring sizes do not match jewelry sizes. Most makers send a free sizing kit.
Common questions
What is the best smart ring for sleep tracking?
For most people, Oura Ring 5. It has the most sleep research behind it and works with iPhone or Android. If you do not want a subscription, RingConn Gen 3. The sleep scores on these rings are not FDA cleared. Treat them as estimates.
What is the best smart ring for sleep apnea?
If you need a test, Happy Ring. It is a home sleep test, by prescription. If you want a screen and you have a Samsung phone, Samsung Galaxy Ring, once its cleared feature is released. If you already think you have sleep apnea, skip the screen and ask your doctor for a sleep test.
Is a ring better than a watch for sleep?
Many people find a ring easier to wear at night. Watches add heart rhythm features like an ECG that rings do not have.
Can a smart ring detect sleep apnea?
Some can. Happy Ring is cleared as a home sleep test. A doctor orders it and a sleep physician reviews the results. Samsung Galaxy Ring is cleared to flag signs of sleep apnea. Other rings offer screens the FDA has not reviewed. Either way, sleep apnea is diagnosed by a doctor.
How much does the Happy Ring cost?
Your cost depends on your insurance. In October 2026, Happy Sleep listed a starting price of $399. That covers the ring, a video visit with a Happy Sleep doctor, and 6 months of monitoring. After that, monitoring is $15 a month. Happy Sleep says it checks your insurance and tells you your cost before testing. Check happysleep.com for the current price.
Do I need the subscription?
For Oura, most features need the membership. Samsung Galaxy Ring and RingConn have none. Happy Ring is ordered through your doctor.
