Best wearable for an older parent

For an older parent, the most important features are fall detection and a way to call for help. Heart features are a bonus.

From Dr. Kenny Civello, cardiologist and electrophysiologist

Reviewed October 2026. Prices as of that date.

The best device is the one they will wear and charge.

Fall detection only works on the wrist. Pick something simple enough that your parent keeps it on and keeps it charged.

My picks

Know before you buy

Family Setup turns off heart features

If your parent has no iPhone and you set up their Apple Watch from yours, the ECG, rhythm alerts, and sleep tracking are not available. Fall detection still works.

Turn fall detection on

Pixel and Galaxy watches do not turn it on by default. Check the setting.

No device catches every fall

There is little published data on how often watch fall detection works in older adults. It is a safety net, not a guarantee.

Make charging a routine

Charge at the same time every day, like during a morning shower.

Common questions

Which is better, a watch or a medical alert button?

A watch adds heart features and works like a phone. A medical alert device is simpler and connects to a live person. Choose based on what your parent will actually wear.

Does my parent need their own phone?

For Apple Watch heart features, yes. For fall detection with cellular service, no.

Can the watch tell me when my parent falls?

It can call emergency services and text emergency contacts after a hard fall if your parent does not respond.
